I needed this adapter in order to use a headphone set with my new Lenovo laptop. Apparently newer laptops are no longer being manufactured with separate line in/mic in/headphone out jacks. Instead they use a single multi-pole "combo-jack". I think the combo jack is intended to be used with a headset with an integrated mic.Problem is, the combo jacks don't work with stereo headphones. The headphone jack plugs in okay, but no signal is delivered to them. So there's no sound.This adapter breaks out the combo jack into separate headphone and microphone jacks so that you can actually use these devices with the laptop.Why are manufacturers doing this? To save money, of course. Whether or not it inconveniences customers isn't a factor.
