Adaptec 2258100-R PCI-Express x8 SATA / SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 5405 Kit Controller Card
Cons:Doesn't come with a battery; using onboard cache is not recommended w/o having one.
Pros:Way faster than our previous software array, very easy configuration. |

Adaptec 2258100-R PCI-Express x8 SATA / SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 5405 Kit Controller Card
Cons:Very slow startup, gets very hot and requires active cooling of 200 LFM.
Pros:Very fast IO processor, great customer service, good management tools Comment:
Bought this for my desktop machine to be used with 3 SSD in RAID1E, didn't realize that it needed 200 LFM (~88 CFM) of cooling to keep it functional. Machine sometimes freezes if the card gets too hot.Meant more for a server machine, would most defiantly purchase another one if I was going to use it on a server. Very fast processor, I currently get 600 MB/s reads and 125 MB/s writes with 3 Intel X25-M. |
Running even lightweight vmware machines on our existing beefy hardware was painfully slow; various tests implicated our software RAID array. This card + 4 x 1TB drives gives us the speed we expected, with the redundancy and capacity we want.We ordered ours along with the battery unit, as it was not recommended to use the cache w/o it. (Probably losing a lot of performance). We had an unexpected hunt for an old PCI video card, as this used the PCI-E slot the video card used to be in, and we'd forgotten that our server didn't have onboard video.
