You wonder how can they screw up the manufacturing of such a simple device, a plastic adapter case with a straight-through connector? Well, the little PCB board with the "straight-through" connector wasn't properly mounted, so it wasn't straight at all, it was slightly angled. Just enough to mess up the connection. So the drive did not work the first time, it did not show up in Bios, nothing. You can RMA it if you don't have anything better to do - hell, they deserve to lose some money for that kind of poor workmanship. I did not want to waste my time however, so I just took a screwdriver, loosened the two little screws and repositioned the little connector properly. Everything works now just fine, and fortunately the drive did not get damaged by the initial improper connection. So yeah, it works eventually, but come on... how difficult is it to get something like this right the first time?
