Not good for Linux
|
Okay, a couple of things first. I bought this printer for $50, so the value for the ink alone is great. I also run Linux. I only ever plan to print and scan on this device. Printing. It did not just show up as a direct attached printer. But, Brother had drivers to download and CUPS could find it. However, the driver does not let you set the print quality on for individual jobs. Quality gets set for the printer and can only be changed through CUPS. The program I used for my old HP scanner, Gwenview, could not find the device. Neither could xsane. Ah, more stuff to download - a piece of code that sits between the scanner and computer. To scan, you have to use keys on the device (5 touches) and then it talks to this hunk of software (which you must launch first). The scanner defaults to low res, but can be cranked up higher by editing the script it calls. Linux people might want to stick with HP devices. Windows and Mac users may have a better experience.
