Brother MFC7460DN Multifunction Laser Printer Scan Copy Fax 600DPI Duplex USB2.0 Network
Cons:-No duplex scanning (single sided only)-Scanner cover feels flimsy-Starter toner wears out fast-No backlight on display-Noisy when in use-Driver is pretty big (120mb to install)

Pros:-Good price ration when on special-Duplex printing, ADF scanner, fax features-Fairly small size for home-Inexpensive toner replacement
Comment:
Bought this for 129.99 on special, and used points for free shipping (quite heavy). Initial impression was good, it's well built, well tought of except for the flimsy scanner cover. I feel it could break if I'm not careful enough. There is no backlight on the display but it's not that bad if you have some light in the room.Initial setup was fairly straightforward. Followed the instructions to the letter and everything worked as expected. First, I downloaded everything (driver, update d control center, new firmware, fax to internet update ) then installed the driver part. I had assigned a manual IP to the printer so I chose the advanced option. Right after that I was able to print, scan, etc. However I must say that the driver interface itself feels... old and dated, kind of something that came out early 2000's. It's functionnal, but it's not pretty and does not integrate nicely in Windows 8 for instance. Then I discovered a problem: from the printer itself, I can't scan directly to a PC. I can do it from the PC using the driver, but not the other way around. Not the biggest deal breaker, could be just my configuration, I still have to figure this out. I haven't configured scan to email yet, I'm not sure if it's going to play nice with gmail's mandatory SSL encryption. The other problem I have is with the noise, not really when it's use because that is expected, but rather the "fan" noise that stays active for quite a while even if nothing is happening. To fix that I set the printer to go into sleep mode after 1 minute. As for the different features, printing is great (text only), duplex mode saves paper, ADF scanner is fast, the cover scanner is a lot slower. Fax is working, useful for the once-in-a-year time you need to send something. Haven't tried pictures yet but I will soon. This is a nice all-in-one machine, not too expensive, with the right features but it's no where worth over 150$.Not a con really but it doesn't have wireless, but it does have network so plugged to a wireless router there is no problem accessing it.Oh and a little nitpick for French users: they supply "stickers" that you can put over the keys on the machine to have the French words on them, but these stickers are low quality and I decided not to use them.I would appreciate if Brother would update  their software to a more modern look, but I'd rather have something that looks old but works then something that looks new but has bugs in it.Quick tip: if you want to edit some setting and are tired of using the direction keys and small display of the printer, use the "Bradmin Pro" tool, it will let you edit from your PC. Once again it's not a pretty tool, but it lets you change all the settings at once then applies and reboots the printer for you.

Cons:LCD is not bright enoughCan be a bit expensive for a machine that's been around a long timeScan to email could be less dependent on Brother's software and email clientDuplex ability is manual

Pros:Solid feelReliableCovered paper trayScan to PC, Scan to email, fax to PC, scan to FTP, etcToners are relatively cheapQuick reliable ADFBrother has software available to administer a squadron of these machines...each doing your evil bidding. *insert  evil laugh here*
Comment:
My company has many of these units. Some have been in service for years. I can tell you they NEVER give me any trouble (I'm the PC support guy). They are just super solid and reliable with fairly cheap consumables. They are loaded with features as well. Scan to whatever. Fax to or from whatever...you get the idea.I can only speak to it's basic fax functionality and scan to email as those are the only specialty functions we require. The fax does what it says and has a myriad of options for those who need them. The scan to email is not quite as impressive. You can't directly scan to email from the machine. You have to use the software you install on your computer. Even then it depends on your email client to send the email. More professional machines send email directly without the use of a client. For its price I can't complain. And speaking of price, this model and it's siblings are pretty long in the tooth and should be a bit cheaper. The only way I buy them is if they're on sale (Unless the company needs one in a hot hurry and that's very rare). They're a real bargain if you can get them for $150 or less. I've seen them advertised for as much as 260 clams. Forget that! Wait patiently, if you can, and you'll see them on sale...sometimes on this fine site and sometimes on other sites. Fortunately, this fine site price matches. ;)A covered paper tray seems like a petty thing to mention but it's important in a dusty environment and this baby's got it. The printer this one replaced didn't and...well...that's why it's being replaced. It started jamming and not picking up paper.I would never hesitate to purchase one of these or recommend them to anyone.BTW, thanks NCIX! Your sale price was great and your delivery was fast. May the force be with you...always. ;)

Comment:
Overall this is a very nice all-in-one.There are drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux. It's fairly small and compact. Duplex printing is supported. It's quite fast at 27 PPM and the toner is surprisingly cheap. My biggest complaint is the awful display. It's an old-school monochrome LCD, very small and not backlit. The angle is non-adjustable and the contrast isn't very high even at maximum, you won't be able to see a thing unless you look at it head-on. The display in the newer but cheaper MFC-J615W inkjet is far superior, a TFT LCD.It's also pretty noisy when printing and a fan runs for several minutes afterwards to cool it down. The fax is slower than its upgraded version the 7860DW (14.4 kbps vs. 33.6 kbps)...not that I send too many faxes anymore. And the scanner cover, just like the MFC-J615W, has no damping and just slams right down. A bit disconcerting when it does this on top of glass...I'm upgrading from an old Canon MF5770, which was Windows-only and whose ADF started to fail (grabbing two pages at once). The Canon was a bit quieter, had a nicely damped scanner cover and a larger backlit display. This new Brother unit is much more compact, much better supported and has way more features, but that darn display!Overall I'd still recommend it though.

Cons:Included scan software has no features

Pros:ADF, network, price when on sale
Comment:
On sale for $150, it has a network port, it has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), and it does network scanning. The printing is good for a monochrome laser printer. It prints fast and the text comes out nice and clear. Pictures look okay.

Brother MFC7460DN Multifunction Laser Printer Scan Copy Fax 600DPI Duplex USB2.0 Network
Cons:- Software that comes with this printer is HORRIBLE; it provides very minimal options for scanning- Scanning is not duplexed/double-sided; you'll have to merge files after scanning double-sided pages- Picture printing is mediocre

Pros:- Network printing, faxing, and scanning- Document feeder- Flatbed scanner is fast- Network Port (RJ-45) for network connection- Fast Printing
Comment:
I bought this multifunction printer for several reasons: it was on sale for $150, it has a network port, it has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), and it does network scanning. The printing is good for a monochrome laser printer. It prints fast and the text comes out nice and clear. Pictures look mediocre to ok-ish.Scanning is good with the ADF. Both the ADF and the flatbed scanners are fast and clear. There are only two downfalls to the scanner. The first being that the software that comes with the printer is very minimal and basic. The options for scanning are well below what I expect out of it. Fortunately, I can use Hamrick's Vuescan scanning software for my scanning needs. The Vuescan detected the scanner automatically, and it gives you the option, among hundreds of others, to choose between the ADF or the Flatbed scanner. The other downfall is that the scanning is not double-sided. If you have multiple double-sided pages that you need to scan, you'll have to merge them after you scan them. The copying is good; it will copy from the flatbed or the ADF. Again, picture quality for print won't be the best, but it'll be work.Haven't used the Fax and I don't have any plans to use it.Otherwise, for the $150, it's definitely a GREAT buy.
