D-LINK DHP-540 Powerline AV 500 4PORT Gigabit Switch
Cons:* Can't tell if security key function is working without using software
Pros:* Faster than Wifi* Much lower latency than Wifi* Similar price to slower units when PM'd* Small unit and understated look |
I bought one of these to provide network connectivity to my TV/streaming devices in my living room as wifi is just not consistent enough.I live in an old (~1950's era) house that has had some new wiring done. I simply plugged the device in, plugged another D-Link powerline adapter in near my router and it worked. I get about 90mbit/s read/write from my desktop using Windows 7 via SMB shares. I could probably do better if I played with the config, tried NFS or tried other outlets but 90mbit is more than enough to stream Blu-ray images without any problems.Latency is also very low, I get about 15-20ms additional latency from powerline versus directly connected to my router... still very low and good for gaming compared to wifi.Only thing that would make this a better value is to include an adapter for the other side of the network... but since I PM'd I'm not too upset.
