LINKSYS NAS200 Network Storage
Cons:Slow transfer speeds if copying large files. Not unbearable, but noticeably slow.
Pros:Quick and Easy installation. Fits underneath Linksys Router. Streams to Xbox360. Quiet Comment:
I bought the NAS200 for my girlfriend's family because they were looking for a easy backup solution. They didn't want to spend to much (who does?). The NAS200 fit the bill plus gave them a few added features that they weren't expecting. What surprised them was that this little black box could stream their movies to their Xbox360 as well be accessed over the internet. We purchased this with 1 500GB Seagate HD for a total of $260 inc tax. |

LINKSYS NAS200 Network Storage
Cons:Slow!
Pros:Quiet, sturdy, easy to setup Comment:
I decided that I needed to offload my vids and tunes onto a dedicated file server and while this unit does as expected, network transfers are exceedingly slow. (Max 3.8mb/s) 100mbps lans can max out way faster than that and SATA drives max out MUCH higher as well. While I'm not completely upset with the unit and it performs well enough, I just wish that transfer times were faster. I suppose you get what you pay for though as this WAS the cheapest BYOD network storage unit I've seen.Looking back I probably would have skipped this and spent the extra $100 for the d-link dns-323 and gotten more than twice the transfer rate... I have been using this NAS200 for media streaming, and as a central repository for my backups. The product is really easy to configure (especially if you are used to linksys router config screens). I had mine up and running within 10 minutes. This is replacing an old "backup" tower i had. The chassisis very small, so it doesn't take up a lot of room in my multimedia rack. The power consumption is also way down from my old server, especially when the hard drives are in "sleep" mode. The only disadvantage is that the processor inside the nas200 is very slow, therefore upload/write speeds are limited to just under 4MB/s.I've seen a few people complaining that this unit needs gigabit lan... WHY? it maxes out at 4MB/s write and around 15MB/s read speeds... Gigabit won't make a difference.Sure this thing is slow, but it works very well and reliably, and is a fraction of the cost of a "true NAS"
