Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:Need to know how to flash a router to maximize experienceOEM router firmware very basic and spotty
Pros:Easily flashable (DD-WRT, Tomato etc)Looks new (for a refurb)Great speed and rangeGood looks Comment:
I had a DIR-655 for about 4 years and it was time for an upgrade because in this timespan, the wireless items in the house nearly tripled!!I suggest getting this router E4200V1 vs the newer model E4200V2 because of the possibility to flash the firmware with DD-WRT or Tomato. The V2, even if superior in specs, uses a Marvell chipset and is NOT flashable.I immediately flashed it with Victek Tomato and started messing with the settings (TX power, QoS, security, schedules,.etc). You can do so much more with an open-source firmware. My dB signal (the lower the better) went from -68db from my D-Link to about -45db at the exact same spot using same hardware. The connection is generally 240-270 mbps for the 2.4 ghz band and about the same for the 5 ghz band. It seems identical to my DIR-655 minus the 5 ghz band but this is completely another ballpark. The E4200 has a much better QoS (even better when flashed), your bandwidth goes where it is most needed. The result is that webpages open in a flash and videos plays without a hiccup. Range is much better too, router is in the basement, 3-4 bars up the the top floor. At 70$ this is a steal! |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:It's a refurb, so you never know if they found and actually fixed the problemThere's known issues on the Cisco website where the WAN can't pull an IP from some internet providersUSB doesn't support 3G/4G internet sticks for a backup connection
Pros:Good WiFi coverageEasy to use interfaceSupports basic QoS out of the box, has a ton of value added features Comment:
I found the need for one of these, but I regret to say it's going back. That's the problem with refurbs, you rely completely on the information coming to you, other than some basic testing, that's what you go on to fix the problem. The router itself, is a good router, I had an WRT610N and was satisfied, and this one, for the day it worked, was good too. All my QoS worked, DHCP reservations, Dual band wireless. Then I did a firmware update, not to Tomato, but just using the Cisco in house brand. After that, it never pulled a WAN IP address again from my internet provider. My PC could pull one, and if I connected this router's WAN port to another routers LAN port, it pulled one just fine, but not from my modem. I think it's a flaw in the firmware, but no amount of tomato firmwares could reverse what happened, so its going back for RMA. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:QoS
Pros:Excellent range and speeds. Comment:
I upgraded from D-LINK DIR-625 and I must say, I am impressed! I recently put together a new gaming rig and I could not game at all with wifi. It was unplayable. When I switched to E4200, my lag was gone (on wifi). The latest DD-WRT firmware is buggy and unstable. I have switched back to stock cisco firmware and it's running great. I don't know why people complain about this router becoming hot to touch. It's not hot, maybe a little warm where the cisco logo is illuminated. Wish it had easier QoS system like my d-link router had. In my d-link router, I was able to priorities applications / devices using numbers. Overall, great range and speeds. A steal at $50. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:No external antennasCan get very hotNot for network novices
Pros:can run DD-WRT and gives a lot of control to the user.hardware quality is above average. Comment:
The main advantage with this product, is that you can flash it with DD-WRT to leverage more of the potential in this piece of hardware. There are no external, replaceable antennas, which this unit really needs. Inside a house with multiple floors, the TX strength must be set quite high, at 100dbi, to reach the entire house. This can cause the router to get VERY hot and impacts long term stability. I have plugged in a USB powered fan to blow at this all the time and this does wonders to keep it cool. All in all, it is a gem of a hardware, but requires quite a lot of tinkering to get it polished into a jewel.I would only recommend it to those who have the patience to do research and read a lot about the various settings it has. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:B/G spectrum not much better than on WRT45GL [I hoped for more]
Pros:Refurb. but looks new [maybe Linksys just wants to get reed of v1 stock?!?!]A LOT of DD-WRT & Tomato flavores to choose from;1GB on wired; Comment:
After years of [wireless] nightmares w/my WRT45GL [yes, w/Tomato & DD-WRT]I was determined to never buy this brand again. However, spotted E4200 [refurbished] for under $50 and decided to give it a try. Didn’t explore original firmware a lot but it looked like working fine; flashed w/Victek Tomato and so far – so good.I do not have any N devices and can’t test it.B/G seems to be reaching a bit further than WRT45GL at its best. Still not sure about stability of wireless signal, but it is not my priority anyway. If wired connection is as stable as on WRT45GL, I will be happy.Probably would still barter it for ASUS RT-N16 though.. Anyone?? ;-) |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:- None for now
Pros:+ Nice looking+ Fast+ Stable so far+ Great price/performance+ Can flash firmware Comment:
I don't usually buy recertified items for online shopping because each manufacturer has their own definition of refurbished. I took a chance with Linksys and I am glad I did. It's been stable and I hope that with a flashed firmware, it will stay that way. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:None, speed and stability is excellent
Pros:Dual band, 5ghz is a savior for airplay Comment:
This is version 1 meaning you can still flash ddwrt turning this already excellent router into a super router. The 5ghz band has helped with the airplay dropouts i used to get when streaming from my ipad to my pioneer airplay amp. Remember to use a high 5ghz freq and 40mhz bandwith. I will prob buy another one soon to use a repeater. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:Stock firmware is horrible, flash over it asap.
Pros:Dual band, fast, can load DD-WRT or Tomato Comment:
This is a version 1 router. You can flash alternative firmwares and I strongly advise you to do so. The stock cisco firmware sucks on it, and Cisco has not bothered to update this firmware because it is focusing on firmware for it's Marvell chipsets (E4200 V2, EA4500, E3500, etc). I diligently read many forum threads and found some people had bricked their router flashing it. As I suspected from reading the posts, they were negligent and either didn't follow the steps to the tee cause they thought they knew better, or were careless and flashed THE WRONG firmware. Make sure you get the correct file as this is a 60k NVRAM, for ddwrt you must flash the trailed e4200_mini first, and for Tomato. You CANNOT CROSS FLASH; flash back to stock before flashing from Tomato to DD-WRT or vice versa. Onto performance, this router range is great; slightly better signal quality at same range placement than my WRT54GL and WRT160N. I put Tomato Toastman's mod on it. 5Ghz works fine, signal strength obviously degrades after passing walls and floors. I upgraded because my old WRT160N could not turn on QOS and IP Traffic Monitor and max out my download speeds (25Mbps) over wireless N. This easily does so while still at ~60% CPU usage, leaving room for further internet speed upgrades or allowing me to do other things like file transfer/video streaming over LAN or Wireless. I have not seen performance issues and I suspect some people who do see them with DD-WRT or Tomato did not read the threads properly (such as you must use WPA2+AES for 40Mhz channels or performance degrades dramatically, at farther distances 40Mhz is a performance decrease over 20Mhz due to interference, noise, distortion, and other issues). Note I did not load the USB version of the firmware onto the router because I did not have a need for it. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:Compatibility problems with PPPOE (apparently)(new firmware does correct it)
Pros:Nice lookingNAS et printer sharing possible via USB ports Comment:
I am very disappointed by this product. I tought I could trust a Cisco router, but this one.. never. After I bought it, I spend almost 10 hours configuring in all ways possible (with CD/win7/manually) and I did a complete settings check. It still didn't work. Actually, after booting it, I worked for few minutes, then I lost internet connection. It did this everytime. I tried with my older WRT54G and there wasn't any problem. So I ask for RMA which was accepted and I received another one. I had hope it would work and I had help an IT guy to recheck my configuration, but we had the same problem. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:haven't found one yet
Pros:Can be modified Comment:
Purchased a third unit for my home to expand my wireless network across all floors in my home. I would highly recommend one of these units, and then once you receive it change the firmware to an open source solution (DD-WRT, Tomato, openWRT). Gives you so much more options.I have my main internet connection, my firewall, and then three of the units. One thing that I was hoping for, wall mountable, but nothing a power drill and some screws couldn't handle. Word of caution, the moment you take apart the router, you void the warranty, so if you are looking to mount this unit on the wall, you will need to take it part to cut some holes for mounting screws.other than that, unit is great, whole house has wireless, and I can even get access while on my deck over looking the country side. Nothing wrong with these refurbished units, if you are ok with the idea, look at it this way, someone bought it, didn't work for them, Cisco/Linksys repairs the units, and here you go brand "new" unit for half the cost. |

Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual Band Wireless N Router WEP WPA WPA2 Retail *Refurb
Cons:Refurb** High price, however with this week's discount its absolutely worth it.
Pros:Extremly Fast, Reliable dual band router Comment:
I've had this router for just a bit more than a year now, complements well with HD streaming and gaming. If you don't care about refurbs this is a good deal. |
I bought this largely at the recommendation that this is one of the best routers for DDWRT. I've been using this for my home Internet gateway for 2 weeks now and never had to restart it or anything. I'll need more time to test out QoS, but initial findings is quite good. I'm now able to game while my parents watch Internet TV. Since I only had 5Mbps download speed (2.5Mbps in reality), this used to be a problem without QoS.I did not use the original firmware at all, so I have no idea how well it does.
