Linksys PLEK400 Powerline Internet Adapter Kit 200MBPS 1 Port 10/100 Homeplug AV
Cons:I saw a video online showing power line ethernet somewhere between the speed of cat5 and wireless N for speed. The video showed a 2 minute download over wifi, a 20 second download over power line and a 2 second download over ethernet when downloading the same file using each type of tech. Unfortunately power line is not that simple. Speed varies greatly from plug to plug (2 plugs in the same room showed huge differences in speed). Over 4 devices I get an avg speed of about 135/127... which is not 200... and is actually a little slower than my wifi. At times speed can drop down to 64-80 (no idea why).
Pros:Very easy to set up, leaves 1 of the 2 outlets completely free, snappy network (seems more responsive than wifi), easy to update firmware, solid product |
A very good device for someone looking to extend their network past the range of wifi (back yard, garage, basement, lead room, etc). If you already good range/speed on your wifi, I'd wait until wireless AC matures and go that route. I don't see any benefit to Power line over Wifi (other than a snappier feel when browsing file shares, etc). My wifi doesn't suffer the same issues others who have bought this product have brought up (stuttering, dropped connections, etc).Do your research before buying. I don't regret the purchase, but at the same time, I'm not seeing a 10x increase in speed over my wireless.
