Cons:-No SSD hardrive-only 8 gigs of RAM-A bit more expensive then comparable ASUS-huge power brick-TN panel (vs IPS)

Overall this laptop is excellent, and in my opinion is worth the slight premium over the comparable ASUS model. The GPU (980m) is currently the top of the line in mobile graphics and is extremely capable. The speakers, along with the Sound Blaster Cinema 2, are excellent and were a real selling point for me. The keyboard has a great feel and is easy to type on. The trackpad is large and functions well. MSI has finally moved to a two fan cooling solution with the GT72 models and it is superb. The two fan configuration keeps the components cool without spinning up to unbearable volume (as was the case with my old MSI GX660R which had a single fan). Overall the laptop has a great build quality and I think they nailed the overall design; some gaming accents without being garish or over-the-top. Beware that this is a large, heavy laptop. The power brick is a monster, but supplies 230w (50w more than the ASUS) so you know your 980m is getting enough power.I bought this model (no SSDs and 8 gigs of ram) to save a few bucks while upgrading it myself. I purchased two m.2 SSDs and 16 gigs of RAM and upgraded the laptop immediately. Upgrading was quick and easy and allowed me to install windows 7 on the SSD raid array. DISCLAIMER: I am not sure if upgrading the laptop yourself voids the warrant in Canada. I decided to go for it, because all of my past experience with MSI products suggest they last for years without issue. My GX660R gamed hard for 3 years without a hiccup and is still working great, just not running current games very well so it was time to upgrade. If you go the upgrade route, be sure to pick up SATA m.2 SSDs NOT PCI-E m.2 SSDs. I used the 120gb Kingstons: http://www.ncix.com/detail/kingston-120gb-ssdnow-m-2-sata-5a-102255.htmBe sure you fully seat the SSDs in the m.2 slots, as it is possible to install the SSDs with the screws while not having them fully inserted. (Trust me, you will save yourself a fright when the bios doesn't pick up the SSDs).Anyways, I highly recommend this laptop if you are comfortable upgrading yourself. A laptop this powerful deserves to have the OS on an SSD, so pick up the model up from this one if you don't foresee upgrading. |
This is my first day with the gt72 2qe 641us. Overall an excellent gaming notebook. Arrived in great condition with zero dead pixels (my biggest fear). What I really like:Keyboard is great. Quiet, great feel.The built in speakers are the best I have ever heard in a laptop, miles ahead of my old g75vx's speakers.The quality of the build materials are exceptional, it's a well put together machine, feels solid. What I don't like:Loud fans at idle. Not a wind noise, it sounds like a bearing noise. Like cheap fans. Louder than I feel it should be, louder than my old G75vx by quite a bit.As great as the keyboard is, it's jammed together. I wish they would have used the real estate better than having about 2 inches on either side of the keyboard go to waste. I'm not going to complain about weight, or battery life here. You don't buy a truck and complain about fuel economy. The touch pad is hard to get used to, no physical borders is annoying, especially in windows 8 when you keep opening the side menus. The Touchpad buttons require quite a bit of force, maybe you prefer this I do not.$300 Cheaper (500 if you get it on sale like I did) than the gt72-658us, and all that is missing is 4gb of ram, and a 128gb m.2 ssd. $150 worth of parts. Save yourself the money buy this, upgrade soon after. Can't give it 5 stars because of the loud fans, but it is very good.
