Mediasonic Probox 8 Bay 3.5IN SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure USB3.0 eSATA
Cons:"We've got a hot one here!"
Pros:Multiple drives in one enclosure |
I purchased this in late December after moving my HTPC setup to a Zotac ZBOX AD10 mini-PC. That mini-PC has eSATA without port-multiplication support but does have 2x USB 3.0 ports meaning this made sense.I have previously owned the 4-Bay Mediasonic cases (USB 2.0 and eSATA) as well as a pair of Sans Digital 4-Bay eSATA enclosures. The Sans Digital product ran the coolest of the enclosures seeing my older WD 2TB Green drives report temperatures of 36-37C under load. The Samsung F4 Eco Drives run 30-31C under load. The old 4-Bay USB Mediasonic enclosures run warmer as well (they would see temperatures of approximately 40-43C for the same WD drives). In this 8-bay USB 3.0/eSATA enclosure, I find the data transfers are slower than the Sans Digital or 4-Bay Mediasonic boxes topping off at around 70-75MB/sec write vs. 90-100MB/sec on eSATA.Despite the convenience of having eight drives in one enclosure (on a single USB 3.0 cable), this this is HOT! On the lowest fan setting, I'm seeing the WD drives running at 46-47C with the door closed. On the middle setting, I'm seeing temperatures around 42-43C. I've spoken to Mediasonic about this and they have said the enclosure will run warmer as they've included the power supply inside the enclosure. I'm debating switching my drives around and putting the warmer ones on top and seeing what difference (if any) this makes. I also found one of the fans isn't working to full capacity (out of the box) and Mediasonic is sending me a replacement. The build quality is nicer than the Sans Digital boxes and I've always thought the "look" of the Mediasonic boxes is nicer, however, the higher temperatures are not a good thing for hard drives. I will update further once I get the new fan and move the drives around to see what difference it makes.
