Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 64-bit for System Builders
Cons:security implementation can be 'difficult' to work with (that is a total understatement)
Pros:DX10, full support for memory over 3GB Comment:
Picked this up when I was building my gaming rig. Note that this version does not include 'Aero', so you don't have the fancy '3D' interface that Vista originally hyped. Most games will automatically push Vista from Aero back into basic mode before launching anyways. The security implementation designed to 'protect users' is a friggin nightmare to work in. No more easy workarounds by manually tweaking script settings or using uncertified 3rd party plugins for Internet Explorer.Until the latest games support an alternative O/S, there's not much choice but to grin and bear it... |
This is vista basic! So, forget about aero, media center, more games and stuff like that... You get a good, solid and simple operating system. Most performance problem people have with vista is caused by the fact that they use the version that is installed by some vendors. Those versions are full of crap and really not useful software. But when you install a basic and clean version of vista like that, I can tell you, it is REALLY great! With a little tweaking, this is probably the most stable system I had in my life.
