A couple of things to be aware of
Comment:
A few things to be aware when buying this product: 1) It has 2 USB ports, but can only support a single drive, the 2nd port is for printing. You will have to buy one for each drive 2) The instructions are not very user friendly 3) You will want to use a blank drive, the device needs to re-format the drive and you will lose any data that is on the drive 4) It is powered, so it will support a 2.5 |

Too expensive
Comment:
This device requires a firmware update to read or write NTFS. Additionally, it doesn't handle user configured folders very well, but creates folders that are difficult to remove (you need to assume ownership and change rights in windows to delete them). You cannot just plug in a drive and share it on the network. You would need to put your data under the PUBLIC folder, for example, then lose rights to modify it when the device takes over ownership. It has the ability to share media as if it were a media server, but the media must be single level within the specified folders (no subfolders for music, for example). All in all, this should have been a quarter of the listed price, and the limitations should have been listed upfront. It just isn't worth it. |

Pretty Good So Far
Comment:
Setup was painless, and including multiple USB adapter wires was helpful. It would have been better if you could hot-swap USB drives (instead, if you switch out drives, you have to re-identify the IP address, and re-configure FTP settings), but overall it is an inexpensive and easy way to setup a NAS drive with FTP support. |
My previous NAS enclosure failed. I was looking for a new and inexpensive one, but I did want a few more features than the old one. After reading several reviews I decided to give the Patriot Gearbox a try, and I am pleased with my decision. While its not perfect, it is very good, and has performed extremely well. My only complaint is that I wish it supported NTFS. The 1TB external drive I plugged in came formatted NTFS and I had to delete the partition, and reformat. It proved a little tricky, but doable. That is my only warning for someone buying this device. Other than that, I love it, and am planning to buy a couple more.
