QNAP TS-212-US All-in-one NAS Server with iSCSI for SOHO and Home Users
Cons:Bit too cute, wish it was black.
Pros:Stable, Reliable, Fast, Lots of features. Comment:
This is one amazing little unit for the price. I bought this on a boxing day sale for $149 and have been perfectly happy with it from day one. I have a 1TB WD green (WD10EACS) installed for backups of all my computers, phone and tablet and a 3TB WD green (WD30EZRS) for all of my media storage. The unit acts as a media server, web server, FTP server and BT client on a daily basis and has never let me down. My router (E3000) gives me more trouble under a heavy load due to heat than the NAS ever has. The NAS can even send email system warnings and did for me last week to tell me about my failing 1TB drive (SMART test failed reallocated sectors) allowing me to make a backup of my backup! I must also note that although I haven't used them extensively, the Android apps have gotten much better in the past few months (I'd imagine the iOS apps would be more helpful on that more limited OS.) It works flawlessly with a WDTV Live Plus (use Linux shares for best results) and a PS3 (Twonky works best here) for serving up media. It allows multiple Users with different file permissions and QOS style bandwidth limitations, this is very handy for sharing media via FTP, while keeping personal files safe and your personal services running smoothly. I did a lot of research concerning speed before I decided on this unit and it doesn't disappoint, 50MB/s down 30MB/s up over Gbe (single disk configuration, I believe RAID 1 results in faster speeds). The only small complaint I have is having to fire up Transmission instead of the native BT client for any torrents only available via magnet link, however it wouldn't lower my rating as it is such a small inconvenience. To all those trying to decide between this and the Synology DS212, I give my vote to this unit, same features, little better speed, lower cost. |

QNAP TS-212-US All-in-one NAS Server with iSCSI for SOHO and Home Users
Cons:Supports 2 IP cameras onlyUSB WiFi support is practically none
Pros:StableWell madeSupports 2x3TBSchedule on/offSurveillance Station included Comment:
It used to be incredibly buggy but pretty stable now with firmware 3.5.1 Build1002. I have not bothered with motion detection since the initial frustration so cannot tell if it works now. Mine records surveillance videos wirelessly through TEW-687GA from a pair of TV-IP110WN IP cameras daily w/o issue for months. Would be nice if it supports more than 2 IP cameras. I bought this unit from NCIX on sale in December 2012. Since then, I have had several problems with this product, most notably two major meltdowns that resulted in significant data loss. After about 6 months of use, the unit stopped working. Qnap support was able to remotely diagnose, reconfigure and restore device operation, but the data was lost. There was no explanation, except that this can occasionally happen.Several months later, the unit reported an error with one of the hard drives. The configuration was RAID 1 (mirror), but data was lost on both drives from the single drive failure. The drives were on the compatibility list, which strangely does not include some of the most common hard drive models. The print server occasionally quite working, requiring the unit to be power cycled. This was rare, but annoying.Apps are advertised, but not supported. App installation can be convoluted, requiring multiple packages. App installation errors often lack information and can be very difficult to resolve, even with significant technical ability. Some apps work great, but I lost several hours trying to get others to work without success.File sever and NFS server capability was good. I use a TS-219P at work and it has been great. Unfortunately, the TS-212 reliability was so bad I had to stop using the unit. I strongly recommend avoiding this particular product.I would give this product one star if I had my order number to submit the review. Three stars will suffice if it saves somebody from making the same mistake I did.
