Drive ran fine with Energy DVD 10 Ultra. I installed the SW suite that incorporates Energy DVD 9 to get bonus SW, but uninstalled P_DVD 9 later and the other applications remained. I am operating Windows 7, 64-bit. I only tested it on Avatar so far but it ran fine with only a single crash. Not certain if this was associated to SW or HW or a thing else entirely. Firmware auto-update SW was included on the install CD, and I updated that prior to starting any testing. The image high quality was very easily double that of a common CD. What surprised me was not only the improved clarity and resolution but the elevated color saturation and accuracy. Images had been actually life-like. I tested it on my Optoma HD 20 projector, that is native 1080P. My wife commented it even looked brighter than normal DVD, which is a bonus when working with a projector. The sound seemed to be rendered incredibly properly by way of my 5.1 receiver. I am working with Digital coax out from my Asus Mobo. The Avatar Blu Ray I tested did not have mouse assistance with Energy DVD 10 Ultra. I don't know if this was the BD or the SW, but possibly was not a fault of the drive, so not truly a con I am guessing. Unit is not really deep so really should match most any application. Front bezel is black with white logos. Tray door is a silver mirrored finish even though it appears tan in picture. There are no jumpers on back, just sata connector and sata-style energy plug. Box incorporates sata cable but no energy adapter for old style power plugs. Box incorporates four screws and computer software as pictured which is Energy DVD 9, video SW, burning SW, etc. The eject button is also the indicator light for the drive. It is vibrant blue and extended and sticks out a small bit but doesn't look to be distracting even though watching films. This upgrade was surely worth it for me. Cost for this retail package is now cheaper than the OEM package so it is a no-brainer.

fantastic price for a BD reader, looks fantastic, does what it demands to do I have however to burn anything but, but the read speeds are Slooooow. i finished a higher end develop and everything else functions completely till i put a cd in and then it takes forever for something to load. i just did a benchmark on it to see if i was crazy but results are 1.46MB/s read occasions still not sure if this is a user error, i'm going to attempt to reinstall software and see if it makes a distinction

The drive looks fantastic, runs excellent, it's quiet - overall a excellent expertise for an optical drive PowerDVD 9 which comes with the drive is 'adequate,' but I ran into a issue playing Avatar. It wouldn't run, the application stated it required an udpate. I ended up upgrading to PowerDVD 10 and that fixed the dilemma. You could as properly get the drive bare and obtain the computer software separate, since you'll end up shopping for the computer software anyways.

Works well, plays/burns every little thing I've tried in it so far. Retail box version came with a SATA cable and mounting screws, a CD containing software and user manual, and a genuine warranty. Slightly noisy, but not loud adequate to be distracting when operating or watching a film. This item does not appear on the Samsung web site as one more reviewer stated. However, information, firmware and so on can be identified at samsungodd dot com. (The 'odd' stands for 'optical disk drive.')

Extremely easy to install, included powerDvd9 software worked excellent to play blu-rays and sounded fantastic on my 5.1 set-up on my rig, picture was also superb on a 23 inch acer led 1080p monitor The only bluray this wouldnt play was Avatar, not the end of the world, positive a update will fix that! Shiny mirrored faceplate looks fantastic, for 65.00 it was worth it. Cant use mouse to watch movies, but thankfully I got the Logitech wireless mouse, keyboard, media remote in which the remote works flawlessly when playing back blu-rays. Its the Logitech S 510 combofor โ.00

Works Wonderful. The drive is a small loud but not too bad. It's roughly 30-50dB. The software program will play at much more than two channels (an issue for drives with PowerDVD 8). Software program doesn't appear to be locked out of anything except for 3D. The front is mirror-ish but I like the appear of it. Blue light lights up only when accessing.I don't have Avatar. Expendables played great. All about the software. Suitable now there are couple of possibilities for software program with BD Drives. On this drive you have to install all of the software (even the junk you don't want) and uninstall what you don't require later. You can only alter the region code 5 times. No freeware possibilities yet (just advising you of that reality). This is the very best solution that I discovered for under 100. The drive is on Samsungs website but the firmware is not. As the other reviewer stated you can get the firmware updates from samsungodd dot com but I don't know if that will assist you with the OEM drive.

Got this for a test bench machine and we occasionally burn blu rays for PS3 dev kits. It's great for that, have no issues what so ever and it was cheap!

Mine came with the most recent firmware pre-installed.All my Blu-Rays play just fine with the bundled software program - I don't have Avatar. As one other reviewer mentioned, the installer for the bundled PowerDVD software program is awful. I write installers for a living and I was appalled by the complete disregard for normal practice and Microsoft guidelines.I did not dock an egg for this since I really feel I am reviewing the hardware, not the software. It's at present working just fine in my media center. I am making use of the optical S/PDIF output on my sound card and letting my receiver do the audio decoding, so I have no idea how the sound is using the bundled software program.Program specs:- Phenom II x4 940- 4GB DDR2 RAM- GTX460 768 graphics- Xonar DS audio

This drive is great , very quiet , compare to my sata DVD drive, use this on my main pc , to rip my Bd collection for backup. and i can watch them on my htpc in the living room. I Pm'd it and got it for 65$ it s a steal .

Works like it should. I sent the very first 1 back simply because it was noisy. I received the second one promptly (Thank You New Egg). It is quieter than the 1st 1, but nonetheless noisy. Note to Samsung, A disk drive created to play movies really should not be heard.

I bought it and it never worked.The only reason I didn't put one star is because I don't have my receipt and they won't let me post a lower review without it.Thought it just wasn't playing nice in my system as a second drive so let it sit for a while. Tried in my new HTPC build and same thing. Doesn't work.

This drive works as advertised so far, fairly quiet and easy to install. I like the mirrored finish look, and it seems to operate pretty smoothly. I had some problems with PowerDVD ver. 9, but after upgrading it works well with my blu-rays. Very happy overall. Price was good as well.

I purchased this drive mainly because I didn't want to transplant my old IDE DVD burner into my new system. I have to say, it does its job well as a DVD/CD burner and is a Blu-ray player to boot! Highly recommended.

I bought this drive to replace a defective LiteOn blu-ray player. It is very quiet and reads disks without any issues.

Came with Power DVD software bundled, but you need to upgrade it($$$) to burn any blu ray discs. It reads and writes anything else though, as long as it's not a blu ray disc, which defeats the purpose of buying it for backing up your system.

Like the other Samsung drives I have, it's VERY fast when ripping discs. I needed a BD drive for rippigng videos to my HTPC hard drive, and i figured i may as well get one with DVD burning capabilities, as i already have a BD burner in my desktop.The extras that came with it were minimal, but it's no matter. I don't think I've ever used any included hardware or sofrware in any drive I've ever purchased... it came with a free version of an old PowerDVD, but there are better, free player softwares out there.y only tiny beef is that the activity light, although not too bright, is HUGE. not a real problem for me, since my HTPC case has a doro that covers it.

This is a quality product that looks great in my HTPC and most importantly for it's intended purpose, it is very quiet. Don't be fooled by the picture, that tray cover actually has a slightly tinted mirrored finished and looks much better than the picture would indicate.
