It may not be as fast as the 840 Pro, which I purchased from NCIX as well, but I agree with other reviews saying this SSD gives the best price to performance ratio. So I've put this one into an older laptop that wouldn't take advantage of the 840 Pro anyway, and the difference between the 5400 RPM HDD that came with the laptop and this SSD is astounding. The Evo will supersede this SSD soon but if you can get it for a deal, go for it. |

The Wirecutter recommends this drive as the best SSD for most, and for good reason. It's reliable, the best performer in its price class, and works perfectly.For a fair bit more money you can shell out for a pro version which offers faster write speeds, but most people need not bother. This drive also is a slim profile which should fit in basically any laptop that can take a 2.5" drive.This is the drive I'm using for my installs now and what I'm recommending to all my friends and customers. |

I recently picked up an old PC with a 2.66 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, Radeon HD 4650 and 500 GB HDD. It was so slow it was painful, thought I was going to have to replace the motherboard, cpu, and everything else. Instead I bit the bullet and installed 4 GB RAM and this SSD and the difference is unbelievable. I have another PC with a Core i3 and 4 GB RAM and this PC is just as fast if not faster than that one now. Can't believe the difference this makes. Silent too, of course, huge improvement over the roaring HDD I had in there. Can't say enough about SSD drives, if you don't have one yet, do it now!!! |

Cons:TLC drives, by definition, can handle fewer writes to each flash memory cell (about 1000 writes per cell). However, that doesn't mean that the drive won't become obsolete before you wear out the NAND cells! This is about my fifth SSD. I've had an OCZ Vertex 1, OCZ Agility 2, Intel X25-M (G2), Crucial M4 and now this SSD.It's shockingly fast. Being the first consumer "TLC" SSD, I assumed there would be a performance tradeoff - TLC flash memory "triple layer cell" has 3 bits of data per flash cell compared to 2 bits for MLC and 1 bit of data for SLC. However, this drive actually boots and runs even faster than my Crucial M4, which was a high-end MLC just last year! My boot time has dropped in Windows 8 from ~15 seconds down to under 11! This is my first SSD and I find this drive to be very fast. Even the advertised write speed is 250mb/s I find the drive to load windows and run programs very fast. Saving out large PSD files takes only a fraction of the time. Only time will tell if the new drive will be reliable. |

Although these are poorly labelled (840 vs 840 Pro, TLC vs MLC flash), Anandtech had a write up about these drives specifically and ultimately I made the choice to grab one for a laptop because of the low energy:price ratio to comparable drives (Agility 3/4, M4, V+200, Hyper 3K, etc). LSI in the 840 120GB forum mentioned a review where write speeds had a significant decrease after relatively few after heavy load write testing. I haven't thoroughly tested it yet, but it's primarily for a linux/win dual boot with a shared virtual machine space for various testing/development. I'm restricted by my controller speed (SATA II), have yet to optimize my scheduler, and I've only been using the drive for a week, so I can't speak to write degradation.For now it'll be a 3/5 for Samsung's choice in marketing/labelling of the product and the lack of education they provide for consumers. I'm not so concerned about the ~3.5 year lifetime as a system would have to write ~10GB each and every day to reach this theoretical limit. |

I installed one of these in my late 2006 15" MacBook Pro. Prior to this I had the original 120GB 5400rpm, 500GB 5400rpm, then a 500GB 7200rpm Seagate. All three of those drives made the palmrest very hot near the drive where the 840 SSD does not. I also don't miss hearing the spin and seek noises of the platter based disks. Installation was straightforward- I purchased Trim Enabler to set up TRIM and diagnostic functions in Mac OSX. It's at 506 power cycles and 600 hours of operation now with no problems. It sees a fair bit of write access and typically has about 40GB available. My laptop only provides SATA I, so I don't necessarily see the full throughput potential of this drive. Benchmarks show read speeds of 110MB/s and writes of 120MB/s. Boot time is remarkably short- faster than brand new HDD based Macs. Application startup and file operations are snappy too. Spending about $200 on this SSD led me to be satisfied with the performance of my MacBook Pro and has considerably delayed my replacement of it. I will be purchasing more of these or the new 840 Evo for other projects in the future.
