TP-LINK TL-WR740N 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Router
Cons:Single band, 10/100 Fastethernet
Pros:Price, supports N, runs dd-wrt, compact size, runs cool, external antenna Comment:
I bought two of these routers on a recent sale. I intended to use one to get better wireless coverage for my home network. The N support was a bonus. I didn't play with the stock firmware much but it seemed adequate and the web management interface was well laid out. I did not use the setup cdrom. I just confirmed that it worked out of the box.I am familiar with dd-wrt so I installed release 19519 and configured it as a wireless bridge. It works well enough and I can exercise the full speed of my internet connection (15 Mbps down/1 Mbps up) through it. The wireless coverage from the central main floor location covers my houseI also flashed dd-wrt on a second router for a friend to use OpenDNS content filtering for his home. The version of dd-wrt I used has run stabily for over a week on each of the devices. I'm very happy with how it works as a basic router.I would purchase again as so far it delivers for its price point. |

TP-LINK TL-WR740N 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Router
Cons:Construction seems flimsy.
Pros:Price, DD-WRT compatible Comment:
Was expecting rev 3 or 4, so getting rev 2.5 was a nice surprise. Flashed easily with dd-wrt firmware (v2) and it works like a great, though the bandwidth monitor doesn't seem to function. Can't beat this little router for the price. |

TP-LINK TL-WR740N 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Router
Cons:-v3 revision
Pros:-Cheapest router around.-DD-WRT compatible Comment:
I ordered two of these and got two v3 routers. These require a special DD-WRT flash before being usable. Aside from that minor inconvenience, they worked perfect. I've been able to use them in all sorts of experiments. For the price, they were definitely worth it.One thing I should mention - both the stock firmware and DD-WRT firmware are going to be more stable than cheap routers from many other brands. For example, super cheap Belkin or Trendnet or D-Link routers are usually garbage. Even cheap Ciscos are usually awful. It's only once you get modded firmware on them that they start to shine. This router has decent hardware. The TP-Link firmware is okay, but I still think DD-WRT is better and more stable, especially if you're a more heavy bandwidth user.Wireless strength on this model is average due to being single antenna. It rarely cuts out, but it did hit 15% signal strength when downloading - my RT-N16 in the same position was at 60% strength. Don't expect the distance of a triple-antenna router from a single-antenna one. |

Pros:Price Comment:
I bought this router for a friend who needed a basic router. So far, it works correctly. I didn't install DD-WRT on this unit because there seems to be an issue, acording to some posts online. |

TP-LINK TL-WR740N 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Router
Cons:
None so far
Pros: - Very cheap- 4Mb flash Comment:
I flashed this router with DD-WRT and it work great. I got the v1.9. This router have a 4Mb flash, which is perfect to install another firmware on it. It was in special at 22$, so I got two of them. |
I have not tried this with the original firmware as I immediately loaded DD-WRT onto it when I got it. I received hardware version 4.29 which was easily converted to DD-WRT. I am using this in client bridge mode to extend my wifi to a computer and printer which don't have wireless capability. It is working great so far and has better signal and throughput than other wireless devices in the same location (have compared to iPhone and a Laptop).
