TRENDnet TE100-P1U Mini Print Server
Cons:
-Does not warn of which printers are compatible or not compatible-tries to use 192.168.0.1 as its ip, which is many popular router it's (DLink)
Pros: -not sure-could not tell you-I guess it works on some computers... Comment:
WARNING: check what kind of printer you have first before purchasing. DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE HOST BASED PRINTER.Bought this for HP 1006 printer. The setup was a little tough because it used 192.168.0.1 as its ip, while many routers use this as their default ip. Had to change my router's ip...After setting up, and reading through the instructions, trying this on a vista 32bit, vista 64bit, and windows 7 64bit, it would not print.I contacted trendnet's online support; to which they replied this device will not work with host based printers... No where is it stated that there are limitations to which printers can be used. It was clearly stated it was design to work with USB 2.0 base printers, which this is. No where in the instructions is it stated this limitation.Would give 1/5 stars for lack information, lack of customer service from trendnet's end. |

TRENDnet TE100-P1U Mini Print Server
Cons:
Difficult to configure attached printers under Vista
Pros: Small, compact, easy to configure the server itself Comment:
I bought this unit to connect my Canon iP6700D to the network, mainly so I could access from my Vista 64bit Laptop.Configuring the sever itself was a breeze, I just had to change my IP temporary to 192.168.0.2 - the default IP for the server is 192.168.0.1. Once I was in, it took only a few seconds to change the IP to match my regular network/IP.IP Address: 192.168.1.99 (my network is 192.168.1.X)Server Name: PRINT-SERVERPrinter Name: U1 (short and easy to remember is key)Configuring the printer itself was not so easy, you cannot do the usual "add printer" and "browse for printer". Windows will find the print server and the printer, but will tell you it "cannot connect". The solution is to install it manually as follows:1) "Add Printer"2) select "Add a Local Printer"3) select "create a new port:", and type of port as "Local Port".4) Enter the following as the "Port Name":\\PRINT-SERVER\U1If you named your server or printer something else, it would be:\\(print server name)\(printer name) (e.g. \\Trendnet-print-server\Canon Bubbljet)5) Follow the rest of the prompts to finish installing the printer. You should be able to successfully print a test page. This review was modfied by poster @ 07-08-10 01:40 PM |

TRENDnet TE100-P1U Mini Print Server
Cons:Doesn't seem to like windows vista 64 bit with the configuration software
Pros:Shares a USB Printer relatively painlessly in terms of setup Comment:
Recently put in one of these print servers and am quite happy with it, was easy to set up in Windows XP and Vista 32 bit, however my 64 bit vista needed some work...In the end, was quick and easy to set-up, and does it's job nicely! |
Had a few moments of WTF when setting this up, but after a quick Google search, I figured out the ip setting problem I was having. Fixed that and it is working great. Can print on my downstairs laser printer from the upstairs computer now so wifey is happy. And happy wife = happy life.
