Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Sound Card and Headset Adapter
Cons:Poor DAC and audio out
Pros:Optical out Comment:
This is one of those special niche product that most people wont buy.I recently got into the world of audiophile, and wanted to buy a cheap USB dac to suppliment my amp until I can save up for a more expensive one.The problem with this one is that the dac quality is quite poor and cannot be used with an amp. When you connect a headphone straight into it, there is not much problem, but it is not any better than the audio out from my macbook pro. The problem is when you connect it to an amp, the volume fluctuates up and down, making it unusable. So, if you are looking for a cheap USB dac, look for something else. Can't comment on the optical out as Macbook Pros and most laptops/mobos nowadays already have optical out |
I've been plugging my headphones into the headphone port of my Creative GigaWorks T20 2.0 Speakers and have been finding that the sound quality was poor. I happened to have one of these Turtle Beach USB audio adapters around and tried it out. The sound quality is far better, and it has a lot more power. I wish I had started using this a long time ago. It's unlikely to beat an expensive sound card with a dedicated headphone port, but for the $20 or so it can be a great improvement to your audio if your setup is lacking. In response to the first review, audio quality is good for a $20 device, and in my testing volume levels did not fluxuate at all with the two headphones I tried.
