VANTEC NEXSTAR3 NST-260U2-BL 2.5IN USB2.0 ALUMINUM IDE DRIVE ENCLOSURE BLUE W/ POWER ADAPTER
Cons:No power switch. No power adapter
Pros:Nice build. Dual plug USB cable for more juice. Comment:
Please be aware that NCIX description is totaly wrong and the actual enclosure DOES NOT come with a power adapter. Instead there is a USB cable and the enclosure draws power from BUS which if you use a larger hdd might not be enough. Overall the enclosure is VANTEC quality and design which personally i find it to be great. |

VANTEC NEXSTAR3 NST-260U2-BL 2.5IN USB2.0 ALUMINUM IDE DRIVE ENCLOSURE BLUE W/ POWER ADAPTER
Cons:-Fit of pieces -Somewhat low transfer speeds
Pros:-Looks.-Dissipates heat well Comment:
Overall I am pleased with the enclosure but there are some things that concern me since I have the NexStar 2.5" enclosure and other than the looks it's superior than the NexStar3 2.5". First off the fit of the pieces are not perfect. When inserting a drive, the sides of the enclosure fit too tightly. I understand that a tight fit is preferable so that the drive doesn't rattle around but I had to apply so much pressure that I was worried that I would break something. After a few times of inserting and removing different drives it has become somewhat easier. Another problem area is the area where you have the usb and power plugs. If you screw down the plate until it's snug with the rest of the unit the area around the power plug bulges out, not much mind you, around half a millimeter. It's still enough to make you worry about the pressure placed on the components inside. Another issue are the transfer speeds. I've benchmarked both the NexStar and the NexStar3 enclosure and to summarize the older NexStar is faster. The NexStar tested at 18.6 MB/s while the newer NexStar3 tested at 14.5 MB/s. I've also tested the same drive from a friend and it had similar results. In the end though I'm satisfied with the NexStar3. The all metal construction seems to dissipate heat well compared to other enclosures made of plastic. It looks great and feels solid and in the end I've never had any problems with it. You can buy much worse. This review was modfied by poster @ 10-27-05 08:11 PM |
-Overall this product is good and solid build quality. I have one problem and that is I bought the wrong one. this is IDE and I needed a SATA2 enclosure. Oh well, refunded and was charged the 15% restocking fee. Was very angry for my own stupidity and had to wait another week.
