I'm very happy
Comment:
Purchased this enclosure to support two Hitachi 2TB harddrives. Works great so far. And with the firewire connection, transfer speeds are very impressive. Much faster transfer than with the USB (I've used both). Only hitch was that the firewire cable that came with the enclosure continually lost the connection - it had a bad fit in the firewire socket for both the enclosure and my MacBookPro. However, since I had my own firewire cable handy, it wasn't too much of a disappointment. I must say that Vantec customer service has impressed me so far. I emailed them quickly and informed the of the problem, and they without delay sent me a replacement cable. |

VANTEC NST-400MX-UFB External Enclosure
Cons:Fan Noise. Disk RAID 1 Rebuild takes A LONG time.
Pros:Fast speeds with eSata connection. Comment:
In general, this is a reasonably priced enclosure given it's capabilities. The only issue is you have to be very careful with the RAID 1 setup. If you shutoff the device prematurely without safely removing the device (if you are using USB) it will start rebuilding the mirror disk again which can take hours. I recommend that you wait 20 seconds after shutting off your computer before shutting off the power to the enclosure. That way you make sure everything is synced up. Also, I recommend downloading the monitoring utility from Silicon Image (SteelVine) so you can see what the enclosure is actually doing to the disks. VANTEC NST-400MX-UFB External Enclosure
Cons:Very noisy. Price for the build quality. Defective FireWire 800 cable included.
Pros:It works. Comment:
The fan noise makes it impossible to leave it powered on your desk. I use it as a backup enclosure so I turn it on only for a short time lapse, then off.The included FW800 cable was defective and I am currently awaiting a replacement.(EDIT: Received a FW400 cable as replacement from Vantec. Thanks to NCIX support staff for taking care of Vantec's screwup)The build quality of the enclosure is cheap. For the price tag, I was expecting *much* better. The MX is the deal. When I Dj, I play nothing but videos and they ALL reside on twin drives inside of one of these. I'm about to get a second one to serve as a backup. Firewire 800 hooked up to a Macbook Pro is the best of the best.
