Bitlocker slows it down to around 50MB/s, but thats to be expected; so not really a con.Very good value for 79.99.The software that comes with it is OK, nothing spectacular. I'm not using any of it. |

Cons:- single USB cable required for power + data- "permanent" enclosure, it's not easy to disassemble if you need to troubleshoot the internal HDD itself

Not much to say about this external hard disk. It does exactly what it says it does. A good product all around.At 1TB, it holds a *lot* of data, so excellent for people who need to transfer large amounts of data back and forth between workstations. Also excellent for backing up any kind of data. For giggles, I even partitioned and used this as the primary boot drive for a Win 8.1 slate tablet to see how well this would handle those duties (partitions: reserve, OS, data).I can't say much about the speed of the drive: lots of non-linear reads and writes so it works anywhere from a meager 10 MB/s to over 90 MB/s from my uses. It always seems to max out around 30-40MB/s over USB 2.0, which is expected.I would have preferred to be able to pop open the casing in order to troubleshoot the enclosed hard disk in case it begins to fail, but given that this a WD vended solution, I'm not surprised that the case is not intended to be opened.Finally, the only problem I have with this drive is that it doesn't work on some older USB 2.0 ports that don't provide enough power. On those ports, you can hear the internal disk attempting to spin up, but losing power and spinning down again. Luckily I already have a Y-cable that works with this drive. This isn't a problem with the product, moreso a limitation of older laptops and desktops that don't supply enough power over the USB port you're plugged into. |
