Pros: Faaaaaast! Beats my 3 drive Seagate 320gig 7200.10 array! Huge amount of storage. Place a jumper on pins 5-6 for sata 3gps operation, very simple. Will not work on a sata 1/ 1.5Gps motherboard. My windows runs much faster with this drive. 64mbs cache? Yes, if you like copying large files like I do, it helps immensely. Comment:
Performance gaming drive, but can be used for storage as well due to it's huge size! I immediately noticed the increase speed over my 3 drive array. Access time is also stellar. This is as close to a velociraptor for this price range you will get. |

I haven't benchmarked this drive but I can say I have had zero problems with it.There is the slightest sort of a humming sound that comes from this drive just when set off to do something. It's hard to describe, it isn't a buzz, and it's not even annoying at all, it's just this really faint humm that my drive makes. It is sort of like the sound hard drives usually make when busy only a bit more high pitched. Don't worry, it's not bad and no louder than the usual HD sounds, it's just different than most.I had a good hum and haw about this vs. a 7200.12 Seagate... in the end I chose this because of the better warranty and reviews were slightly in its favour, but it was really close I think this or the Seagate would have been great drives. Both are the best value and performance on the market from what I could see. |

Was able to purchase this as it was within a few cents of the SATA 2 version and had double the cache. Why not future proof yourself? It is fast and reliable and will likely not suffer the same data corruption that you would encounter with a 2 TB HDD. Very pleased with this drive. |

Bought this drive a couple of weeks back when they were on sale, but the one I got was DOA. It was loud was giving me error messages and just would not work at all.I RMAed it and just a couple of days ago I got this drive. Its the complete opposite. Its quiet, my system seems to run a little faster then it did and I'm only running with a SATA2 mobo and cables.I plugged it in, checked it out in the bios, then booted windows, initialized, then used migrate easy and cloned the drive. Everything went nice and smooth.I would certainly buy this drive again, though I can't give it a 5 out of 5 just because of the problems I had with the first one (reminded me of the same problem I had with the pair of Seagates I ordered a while back).I would still buy another one in the future, at $86 to $89 bucks when on sale, they are well worth the money. |

These are arguably the most optimal drives currently on the market. I went from a pair of Hitachi P7K500 500GB in RAID 1, to a single WD1001FALS for only a couple months only because I couldn't afford the 2nd drive at the time. Then I came into just enough money for a pair of these WD1002FAEX and the price difference from the predecessor wasn't much of an issue in swaying me from the extra cache and upgradability to S-ATA 3...once I have the funds for an upgrade.I've never been one to really care about benchmarks, therefore the only hard data on the performance of these drives that I have are speed tests in Nero. With the P7K500s they would be lucky to even reach 60MB/s, but these Caviar Blacks easily give consistent results from 90MB/s to 130MB/s or just over, depending on the partition.The only concern is that the drives run hot--as in very hot, not merely warm. This is in spite of being cooled by a low 80x25mm fan in an aluminum cage. I'm really anxious to see if things will improve when I replace the stock Lian Li fan with a Panaflo Ultra, but first I have to get a 3-pin tail for the fan and go through the hassle of switching it into the EX-23A...which will NOT be an easy task.In the end I'm very happy with these drives, as they have brought the sluggish performance of my congested system back to a respectable level. I only wish that I waited the 2 or 3 months instead of buying the WD1001FALS just before the new year, which would have saved me $10±, not to mention the extreme annoyance and inconvenience of having to sell the older drive. |

So far, it's been great for me. It's fast enough and the 1TB storage is amazing. At this point, however, SATA3 doesn't offer too much more in terms of performance against SATA2 but you can't go wrong with it. |
I usually by only WD drives and most of them Black edition. I was very anxious to get this one and try it out but received the drive DOA or more like S.M.A.R.T. will see it as bad on ICH10 and Marvel will allow you to install the OS but it will always crash or cause BSOD...I'm not giving up since WD is a great company making great products!
