Western Digital Elements SE 500GB Portable 2.5in USB3.0 Hard Drives
Cons:None

Pros:Good priceCompact size
Comment:
This is a very nice external HDD. The size is great, especially for travel use. Plug it in and it works immediately under Win 7. USB 3.0 speed is fast. Perfect for backing up a laptop.

Western Digital Elements SE 500GB Portable 2.5in USB3.0 Hard Drives
Cons:Short proprietary cable

Pros:Fairly fastSmallQuietPowered by USBRuns very cool
Comment:
It's fairly fast over USB 3.0. ext4 formatted, benchmarked using Ubuntu's disk utility:Average read rate: 69.5 MB/sAverage write rate: 73.1 MB/sAverage access time: 17.91 msecBeing a 2.5" drive, it's small, light and powered by USB. There's a bright white drive access light on the back which works quite well - since it's pointed back, it's subdued. It's extremely quiet, you have to be fairly close to it to hear its minor seek ticking. I did a full backup on it, which took 5 hours, and it got barely warm to the touch. My compressed backups over USB 3.0 are now CPU-bound rather than I/O-bound as they were under USB 2.0.About the only problem I have with it is the cable. It uses a proprietary connector on the drive side and it's fairly short. My desktop sits in an office desk cubby hole and although it's only elevated off the floor 6 inches or so, the cable is so short that the drive won't sit level. I think WD did not use a standard USB 3.0 B plug due to its bulk as the proprietary connector they did use is tiny, but it's still an issue.Overall though, I'm very pleased.
