Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:Connector is fragile
Pros:Quiet, cool, fast Comment:
Using this drive for W7 backup.Fast, quiet, run cool. The only issue is that it disconnect and reconnect when the computer wakes up from sleep. Not a big issue, just annoying.Updated the firmware twice, still the same issue. Maybe this is standard W7 behaviour for a external backup drive. |

Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:Unreliable, drive failed within 6 hours of unboxing
Pros:Compact, portable Comment:
Used this on a new 2012 MacBook Pro with USB 3.0 (after reformatting using Apple's Disk Utility on OS X Lion) and tried to copy/paste two folders containing 1.2TB worth of backup data. After a few hours the drive made it about a third of the way through and then crashed, freezing the copy operation, the drive itself spinning, clicking, and clunking repeatedly. The dead drive would not eject properly, so I had to manually disconnect it and reboot the system. After the reboot, attempting to connect the drive resulted in the same cycle of spinning/clicking/clunking with no response from the drive.Returned the drive a day after buying it, and will not make the mistake of trusting Western Digital again. |

Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:- Useless software.- Power button (HOLD to turn off).
Pros:- Fast.- Simple design.- Very quiet.- Easy to set up. Comment:
Overall this is a great drive. I know it's only been 3 days but I'm sure this device will last. If not, I'll update this review. This is my first USB 3.0 so I'm definitely liking this. I transferred a folder containing raw video data from my computer and it took 7 minutes and 47 seconds for 24.9GB. I'm not sure if this is the expected speed, but I thought it was very fast compared to what I'm used to (USB 2.0). It's also extremely quiet. I can't really hear it at all.The power button is the main thing I thought could've been better. Press it to turn it on and press it again to turn it off. Simple, but no - that's not how it works. When I 'eject' this drive, it automatically goes into some sort of sleep mode, from which I cannot awaken it, forcing me to pull the power cord. Strange. So in order to turn this thing off, I just press and hold the power button until it shuts down, without properly 'ejecting' it. |

Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:None so far.
Pros:Quiet, Compact, Fast. Everything you could ask for. Comment:
Works just as expected. Lightning speed. USB3 is definitely a treat. The on/off functionality takes a little getting used to compared to other externals, but that's not to say it's bad. |

Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:On-off operation not intuitive
Pros:usb 3.0on-off button Comment:
All's well except that the on-off operation is not intuitive. After it's connected to a power source, the unit won't turn on itself and it's expected since there is an on-off button. But as soon as it's plugged into a usb port, the unit will turn on automatically, no need for you to push the button. So far so good. The tricky part is when you want to power it off without unplugging it from the usb port. Simply pressing the on-off button won't do, you have to press and hold for a few seconds for it to work. There is no manual and no instruction in the box to inform you this simple fact. For a while, I thought I got a defective unit. That said, this is really a very good drive, so I still give it 5 stars. |

Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB Black External Hard Drive
Cons:
None
Pros: Compact, Light, Quiet and Fast Comment:
I am happy with this drive so far and it is large enough to meet my needs for some time.I am not using the backup software that is included because many have complained it uses too much resources. |
Purchase on sale & price matched for 109$ good deal. Like the dual USB 2&3 features. The speed its decent, not as fast would you aspect cause its only 5400RPM drive, but it does the job nicely.Recommended
