Solid aluminum building, great price tag for FW/USB/eSATA, energy switch is handy (on the front), design and style offers decent ventilation for a passively cooled enclosure, straightforward installation. No cooling fan, #@$%&*! it!! Yeah, I know...many folks consider fans a adverse simply because of the noise, but numerous persons are ignorant of the effects of heat on challenging drive durability. Just a tiny small fan would make a enormous difference in the heat buildup, and would be barely audible. This is specifically significant for large drives...say, 1TB and larger. The other downside is that the energy supply is only rated for 2A output. My drives (Seagate) show startup existing specifications of 2A, 䔮%. Here again, bigger drives will pull greater operating present. I wish Macally had included a beefier power supply—say, 2.5 amps or 3. amps. When this could not be a issue on smaller drives, operating on the ragged edge of this supply's capacity with bigger drives tends to make me wonder how long it will be ahead of it fails. I purchased a single of these a year ago for an 80 GB HD to use as a backup. Functions great, zero issues. I purchased one more 1 for a 1 TB external backup drive six months ago. So far, no challenges. Performs OK for periodic backups, but I keep it powered down in between. I'd probably get a heftier power supply if I have been going to use it much more usually, or for longer duration than the time it requires to back up.

Really sleek design and style. Installing drive was extremely easy and didn't demand any specific tools. Blue light on the front is good (but vibrant).Very stable stand options (it WILL NOT tip more than). Since of some firmware quirk, it has started to lock up after or twice a week, requiring me to unplug it for about a minute to "reset" it or whatever. This is really annoying and is the principal purpose why I am giving it only 3 eggs. I intend to RMA it for an additional one.

Seems to hold the drive cool enough. General strong aluminum casing. Flimsy rear connector panel; produced of low-cost plastic. It may be connected to the really hard drive itself, but the case appears to develop fairly a bit of vibration underneath it. I'm making use of the set of legs in the front and back of the drive, with the rubber soles, but it nonetheless vibrates. Considering to get some sort of thin rubber mat to place underneath the entire issue. Decent cost

Good performance, commonly functions properly. Does small to compensate for vibration, and getting all aluminium it can be noisy. I'm not putting this as a con mainly because I'm not totally certain whether or not it's the enclosure or the drive I have in it, but it appears a little overly heat sensitive. Temperatures that are elevated but wouldn't be uncommon inside a computer system case look to bring about occasional lockups (and by "occasional" I mean every handful of days if working with typically in those situations). Pulling the plug for a handful of seconds restores standard operation (journaled filesystems are your pal!).When employed about normal area temperatures, anything appears fine.

Front power button is a good feature. I applied it to hold a 1TB drive for Time Machine backups. The internal connection to the tough drive is poorly designed. There are no cables to connect , rather the challenging drive is plugged straight into the primary logic board which flexed a lot when making the connection. The drive was fairly noisy in the enclosure with a lot of vibration. When I mounted the drive in a different enclosure it was a lot quieter with no vibration. The enclosure failed after 5 weeks of use. I sooner or later received a RMA from Macally and sent it in for replacement. Its been 3 weeks and I haven't received it back. Emails go unanswered. I would not advocate this enclosure to anybody.

+ Assembly effortless+ Sata & Firewire (& USB)+ Nice searching case - Not so clever back panel style- Proprietary cables (?)- Lousy Macally client service This is a good case when I got it to work. Initially, I could not get the HD recognized on either a Windows or Mac.. I later discovered that was simply because I was not utilizing the extremely short OEM patch cables from the normal packaged box, and my monster cables had been not capable to match entirely thru the recess in the back panel to make a sufficient connection to the drive.. I am now making use of the drive with the back panel completely removed in order to use my cables. I give the low score to Macally due to their taking 1 month to reply to my query if I had a defective back panel, since my normal aftermarket cables would not operate with no 1st removing the back panel. And also poor marks for the Macally solution engineering team for designing the item in this way..

Easily assembled. Case is well ventilated and conducts heat away from the drive well. Maybe I just got a undesirable apple? This stopped working after a tiny additional than six weeks. Employed this with a 1TB disk to backup my Macbook working with Time Machine and SuperDuper and the included firewire cable. The firewire cable match effectively into the Mac, but was incredibly loose into either Firewire outlet in the back of the enclosure. One day, the Macbook simply stopped right after plugging in the Firewire cable (I had a equivalent dilemma when I originally utilized this when the hard disk was bad. But this time I was able to recognize the disk in a Pc and another enclosure.)I attempted to access with USB connection and that did not perform either.Feet are attached with only one particular screw allowing them to then spin about. Stickers they give as feet then cover the screw. Not confident that the sloppy connection made any difference. It seems it was the "motherboard" of this unit that failed, although I can't be positive. Have RMA'd this. The strong metal building and feet transferred the sound from the drive directly onto my wooden desk like a piano soundboard!

Really like it. No challenges with it so far. I installed a WD Caviar Black 32MB Cache 500GB 7200RPM challenging drive, and connected it to my method via eSATA. The speed is wonderful. 400MB/sec burst, 80-95MB/sec sustained! An eSATA cable would have been good. No hassle RMA from Newegg, they waived the restock fee I was disappointed in the good quality of construction. The listing specs stated "solid aluminum". on the other hand the side with the I/O ports is produced from silver colored plastic. I guess you get what you spend for. The internal SATA connectors were marginal. I decided to go with a Rosewill RX-81 enclosure. Spendier, but worth it.

Looks good, low cost for Firewire enclosure. Noisy. Failed immediately after 18 months. In fact failed really a lot ahead of that, but I assumed it was my computer because it would function intermittently. Swapped it with a new case and have zero problems. Not at all content that something like this with no moving parts would fail in beneath 2 years. It wasn't utilized in something close to a demanding atmosphere.

Good design, keeps drive great and cool. Doesn't resonate also a lot with tough drive, and Mars Plastic erasers under the base dampen vibrations surprisingly properly. Worked nicely, until it became flaky with age. Now I have to replace the enclosure with something that truly operates. * "You're Carrying out It Incorrect!" -- eSATA signals must go directly to the drive, not through a bridge.Would you use a translator for American-English<->British-English? Extremely fashionable, fantastic design and look. Rather quiet. Firewire daisy chaining. Vivid blue light (I commonly cover it up). Unreliable. Fickle behavior. I have had five of these enclosures over the previous 3 years. I started with 2 and 1 died after six months. OSX and Windows would not detect the device at all. Immediately after a lot of trouble with Macally support I was able to get a replacement. Shortly their following my other drive of the initial 2 died. I was completely angry at this point and right after more trouble with support they were good adequate to send me 2 replacements so I would have one particular if a different died. Not too long ago I shut everything down for a long organization trip, and upon returning home the laptop or computer wouldn't recognize either drive. This time I lost all of my data. I will not buy a Macally product yet again, they just look to die at random.

FireWire, USB2., eSATA. Not horrendously ugly. Blue LED on front indicates energy and activity. Brilliant.Oh, and daisy-chaining FireWire!! Incredibly yes! My excellent setup for mass storage involves just daisy-chaining these in FireWire. Neither bus (USB, FireWire) is rapidly sufficient to take benefit of them in parallel anyway. FireWire cord tends to slip out if you tug on it. But this is superior than the option of being stuck inside. Not worth an egg off. I've had this running for months now with one of WD's Green 1.5 TB drives. It's nearly always on, serving up little constantly-on streams of data 24-hours a day.Turns the disk off if the volume is unmounted. Nice.

I bought a Vantec 360FS-BK initially to go with my new Maxtor 1TB drive. For initially day it seemed glitchy with computer recognizing the drive. Then I was getting drive errors, and chkdsk couldnt repair, was negative news. Believed I had negative drive. Unplugged, placed drive in directy with Sata to MB. Chkdsk fixed anything and drive was good! Sent faulty Vantec back to Manuf for warranty. They sent me a new one. Worked 1st try, then I was possessing complications with laptop recognizing the drive. Light would come on, but nothing at all! I gave up on this situation and went with the MaCally! Didnt want to devote far more funds on shipping and waiting yet another 2 weeks.Pro's over Vantec:-Uncomplicated push button up front! No reaching behind the drive trying to uncover flip switch.-Raw Aluminum instead of painted aluminum, drive case is cooler.-Power cord plugs right in, no fiddling with proper placement of multi-prong plug in back-Smaller AC Adapter.-Black Cords (Looks Cleaner than gray)-IT Functions! Vantec supplies sata to eSata bracket & esata cable so you have use of the eSata correct from the start off!Not even an eSata cable with this. Someone with the Vantec had the very same dilemma as me, appears they fixed it with working with one more Energy Provide? "When I initially began it, it worked fine. Then i turned it off to modify exactly where it was connected to my computer. Went to turn it back on, nothing, no spinning drive, no light, no drive icon in My Laptop, nothing! I was about to yank my drive out of the case when I had the idea of employing my other powersupply that came with a unique enclosure. It worked! So, in my situation, the powersupply was the dilemma. Luckilly, I don't use the other enclosure any far more, so I am capable to use its energy supply!" Nicely after a warranty, I'd consider the Energy provide may not be faulty, just not adequate for the case? I was concerned at 1st being a vantec fan, and this enclosure becoming less expensive. BUT, the match, finish, and high quality was superb. Very recommend! Plus, they supply two types of stands. Enclosure as is performs wonderful either way without stands. A+

Blue LED in the front it vivid! i purchased this for my iBook G4, i only use the firewire conection and it's great! i haven't had any problems with it. installation was extremely simple. I don't like the LED becoming so vibrant, but at-least it reminds me by lighting up the space to turn it off.

Straightforward assembly, versatile connections, economical. Did I mention low-cost! Very great backup solution or storage drive. None, it is what it is, simple. Don't forget to format your new drive. (From start out button, go to "my personal computer", correct click and go to "manage".. So many options for formatting!!) Seems to work just fine with a 1 TB green WD drive. eSata is very quickly, USB, hmmm, nicely it is USB. Firewire is much better, but not better than esata! Newegg Rocks!

Ordered two, but 1 had negative symptoms appropriate away. The functional 1 is working great, but the other causes the drive to mysteriously disappear in Windows. I attempted swapping power supplies, drives, cables, etc, and the common denominator is the enclosure. I am RMA'ing as I write this. Largely Aluminum - Backplate is plastic, and the interior tray is sheet metal, which the drive is mounted to. I don't feel it needs a fan to maintain cool, but there is no metal-to-drive speak to other than the four screws. four stars mainly because I can't locate an enclosure elsewhere for beneath ุ that has 1394, USB and eSata in aluminum.

This enclosure has served my wants very properly so far. It plays host to a Seagate 1.5TB drive. Connected to my laptop via eSATA the drive gives the full anticipated 115-128MB/s read speeds. I have no definitive tests for write speeds, but it does do rather properly. It works equally properly over eSATA and USB compatibilitywise. USB of course is slower, although I've seen it get close to the interface max - round about 28MB/s. The build high quality is certainly satisfactory, and the looks are proper in line with Apple's great industrial style. There is absolutely nothing loose feeling or jiggly. I don't hear any weird noises coming from the drive. Feels solid. Even though connected via eSATA, the enclosure can be a tiny finicky in terms of drive detection. This could be related to my laptop's chipset (PM45). My buddy has the USB+eSATA only model (bought it from me, with the WD GP 1TB), and also has a PM45 based laptop. Same as me, he has to use Device Manager to "Scan system for new hardware" to detect the drive. Again, this could incredibly well be an concern of my chipset, and only happens while connected by means of eSATA. USB is flawless as far as a USB connection can be. I previously owned the USB+eSATA version of this enclosure, and it similarily performed extremely effectively. It contained a WD GP 1TB drive which pulled 90MB/s over eSATA. With the "energy effective" drive (not sure if it is or not), the enclosure was a lot more than adequate in the cooling department. That drive was usually quite comfortable to the touch. This current setup with its SG 1.5TB drive does get extremely quite warm, but I think that is the fault of the drive I put inside. It has never had a difficulty operating at high temperatures even though. All in all, I have a really solid storage combo. I'll most most likely obtain this product again when I upgrade to a 2TB external. And yes, the looks are superb.
